It is often said that we do not make things in Britain any more, and while we do not mass manufacture like we used to, there are lots of creative and skilled people working on a small scale. Some families have been making things for generations, and having started his career designing and manufacturing the finest linen for a family business begun in the 1850s, Thomas Ferguson now pursues the same high quality tradition in his other favourite natural material: wood.
Years of working for a national timber business then helped him develop his knowledge of wood and skills as a joiner before he moved to the Devon and Somerset border in 2002 where, on the edge of the Blackdown Hills, he tailored a workshop for joinery and bespoke furniture.
He has always believed that providing a flexible and responsive service is as important as maintaining the highest standards of craftsmanship, which is why he works on such a wide range of projects. Whether it is a piece of fine furniture or a bespoke kitchen that the customer wants, a single bookcase or a fitted home office, a bedroom cupboard or just a bed head, a custom-made door for a home or a church, he will hand make it to order.
He has worked on a number of ecclesiastical projects, and he also undertakes some furniture repairs.
